Iwaseki: I look forward to seeing the gallery overflowing with the profound beauty of gold. Just now you showed me the new works for the show—one thing I sensed this time was the extraordinary presence of the clouds?

Hiramatsu: The skies over Normandy churn and change from moment to moment without pause; you never tire of looking at them. I imagine Monet watched them in much the same way. The air currents there make it a very cloudy part of the world. And following light there means following clouds—clouds racing across the sky only to cut out partway and let light shine through; clouds gathering force, making the light duller. Take the Normandy landscapes of Eugène Boudin—the rendering of clouds is extremely distinctive there too. Every visit to the places the Impressionists liked to paint brings new discoveries; even focusing on the viewpoints of individual artists one finds interesting motifs. These clouds are one such motif.

Iwaseki: Thank you. Do you have any message for those visiting the gallery this time?

Hiramatsu: I have special thoughts about this exhibition, and some strong feelings will come to the surface. I’ve now been leaving footprints of beauty one by one with collectors alongside Sakuranoki for over twenty years, that support extending to several hundred paintings. I am sincerely grateful to all the collectors, and everyone at the gallery, for supporting me in my life as an artist all these years.

I’d like to make this exhibition a commemorative show, with my entire life as an artist at stake; a rich and satisfying show that includes all my ideas, my biggest and best show yet. It will be an opportunity to demonstrate to everyone supporting me over the years my enormous gratitude for being able to work with such joy, to my heart’s content, to the extent that I feel blessed as an artist.

Iwaseki: I’m sure your fans will love this show. Even I find myself incredibly moved by your generous words. I hope to make this an exhibition worthy of your unparalleled efforts on this occasion.
